Sydney heaves in a slow, deep breath to compose herself. She’s able to calm and control her heartbeat but she can’t control or stop it’s bleeding. She approaches Damian’s bed and gently sits on the edge. She presses her lips down into Damian’s neck and remains there, content, inhaling his familiar scent. She reconnects with her husband in the only intimate way she can in this moment. Then she lies next to his body and presses herself close, feeling his warmth and reveling in it. A warm body is an alive and functioning body.
And she feels him in that second, his soul reaching out to her, a slight movement of his being. It makes her scared of the hope in her heart. He’s there with her, she knows that. She knows he’ll hear when she speaks to him, feel her when she strokes his flesh, and love her in return as their lips connect.
But as she gently wraps her legs around his she’s able to push all thoughts of medical conditions and ongoing side effects out of her mind like the true submissive her husband trained her to be. And just like that, gone is the emptiness that had been inside of her since the moment she got the call about her husband’s abduction. Gone is everything but him.
